چکیده
In their study of the evolution of galaxies within clusters, Butcher and Oemler discovered evidence for a strong evolution in star-formation rate with redshift. Later studies confirmed this conclusion and uncovered several aspects of the effect: photometric, spectroscopic, and morphological. This article reviews a broad sample of these works and discusses selection effects, biases, and driving mechanisms that might be responsible for the changes in star-formation rate.

متن کاملThe K–selected Butcher-Oemler Effect
We investigate the Butcher-Oemler effect using samples of galaxies brighter than observed frame K * + 1.5 in 33 clusters at 0.1 z 0.9. We attempt to duplicate as closely as possible the methodology of Butcher & Oemler. Apart from selecting in the K-band, the most important difference is that we use a brightness limit fixed at 1.5 magnitudes below an observed frame K – 2 – the nominal limit of r...
متن کاملIs the Butcher-oemler Effect a Function of the Cluster Redshift?
Using PSPC Rosat data, we measure x–ray surface brightness profiles, size and luminosity of the Butcher–Oemler (BO) sample of clusters of galaxies. The cluster x-ray size, as measured by the Petrosian rη=2 radius, does not change with redshift and is independent from x-ray luminosity. On the other hand, the x–ray luminosity increases with redshift. Considering that fair samples show no-evolutio...
متن کاملColor , spectral and morphological transformations of galaxies in clusters
In this review I focus on the galactic properties in clusters at z > 0.1−02. The most salient results regarding the evolution in galaxy colors, spectral features and morphologies are discussed. The Butcher-Oemler effect is the excess of galaxies bluer than the color-magnitude sequence (where most ellipticals/passive galaxies lie) in clusters at z > 0.1 − 0.2 as compared to the richest nearby cl...
متن کاملHierarchical Clustering and the Butcher-Oemler Effect
We show that the rapid evolution in the fraction of blue, star-forming galaxies seen in clusters as a function of redshift (the Butcher-Oemler effect) can be explained very simply if structure formation in the universe proceeeds hierarchically. We show that a rich cluster observed at high redshift has had a significantly different evolutionary history to a cluster of the same richness observed ...
